The Emperor Constantine
Arguments for quietism are ancient, and have already been dealt with. Sayers’s play about Constantine needs a revival. From her introduction: “If the Gospel was to be ‘preached unto every creature,’ then Christianity must some day cease to be the cult of a minority, and the power of purse and sword must eventually pass into Christian hands—as indeed the Lord himself had told his disciples that they must.”
, The Emperor Constantine (1951)
EUSEBIUS: He said also, “Preach the gospel to every creature.” And when all are converted, there must needs be a Christian State.
CONSTANTINE (drily): True. In that happy day there will be no poor pagan to take the burden and blame of office. Sirs, it is easy to be virtuous so long as you can criticize from outside; but it is not so easy when you have to wield power yourselves and take the consequences.
